The Burial Rites

Your small community is a simple, but a safe and happy one. People are born there, they grow up, they build families, they live, they thrive, and eventually, as is nature’s way, they pass on.

Unless the rites are not performed to completion.

These rites are not of the bodies, which are always accepted by the hungry ground. No, these rites are to put to rest the secrets of those who have passed. If the rites are not completed, their secrets might linger, fester. And where secrets remain, other things may follow. Things which should have been buried. Things which are not meant to return.

Tonight is one of those nights.
Time is of the essence.
The rites must be completed.
Or else.

The Burial Rites is a GM-less collaborative story-telling RPG of dark secrets and ancient horrors, when you work together to weave the story of what has really gone on in your community and protect it from whatever darkness might be lingering.

(This Demo Version is a plain text overview of the concept and mechanics, ready for playtesting and to submit to the Scream Solstice Game Jam; I'm hoping to flesh it out with scenario suggestions and make it prettier later and I'm always open to feedback!)
